Grooming throughout the year
Many dog owners make the mistake of thinking their dog only needs grooming and/or clipping in the hot weather. This really isn't true. Dogs need regular grooming and attention to the coat throughout the year.
A common misconception is that dogs should be clipped really short in the summer to keep them cool. Owners should be aware that if the coat is clipped extremely short the dog may be at risk of sunburn and therefore should not be left out in the sun! If the coat is well groomed free from mats and clean the dog should be quite comfortable. At Dapper Dogs owners can have their dogs coat trimmed to any length they choose to fit in with their lifestyle and the style they like their dog to have.
Another common misconception is that the dogs coat should be allowed to grow long in the winter to keep them warm. Dog owners should realise that most dogs now live in centrally heated houses so they are absolutely fine to have their coat clipped in the winter. In fact owners may well find that when they take their dog for a walk in the winter, or the dog goes in the garden to play, he/she will come in very wet and muddy. If the dog has a long coat this can be quite difficult as the dog must be carefully dried and groomed out or the coat will mat up and the dog will be uncomfortable. The condition of the coat then gets worse and owners may find that the dog takes hours to dry and the house starts to smell of wet dogs. Matted coats such as this may cause all kinds of skin infections, the air can't get to the skin and the damp warm coat against the skin is a perfect breeding ground for bacteria and parasites. Many owners don't realise that a matted coat is very uncomfortable for their dog, it can actually restrict movement and also make the skin itch as well as making it sore. Matted dogs are unhappy dogs.It is apparent then that it is just as important to have dogs groomed and/or trimmed in the winter as in it is in the summer.
Grooming is about so much more than just clipping the coat short, correctly groomed in a way to suit his lifestyle means that your dog will be happy, comfortable and stylish! At Dapper Dogs we are more than happy to discuss your dogs needs with you, different dogs have different coat types, even dogs of the same breed. So a style that will really suit one dog will not necessarily suit another. Silky coats, dry coats, course coats, woolly coats, greasy coats, different skin types all need a different treatement and/or trim. Even your dogs expression and looks will have a bearing on what suits him/her. Just as we know that not all hairstyles suit all people not all grooming styles suit all dogs. Your dog is special and at Dapper Dogs he will be treated as special, we will strive to work with you to find a grooming style that suits your dog as well as your needs.
Different grooming styles require different levels of maintenance from the owner so this is something that should also be considered when choosing how you want your dog to look. Some styles require the dog to be professionally groomed every four weeks with the owner also having to do a lot of work at home. Other style only need professional attention every 12 weeks with little home grooming required. It really is iportant to consider all of these aspects when considering your grooming requiremenst and how you want your dog to look. the most important thing is that, whichever style you choose, your dog is happy and comfortable.
